Calculate the check digit

The check runs only in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Structure of a Leitweg-ID

PartCharactersRequiredMeaning
Coarse addressup to 12 digitsyesFederal government or state (2 digits), then administrative district, county and municipality
Fine addressup to 30 letters and digitsnoOffice within the authority; not case-sensitive
Check digit2 digitsyesISO/IEC 7064, modulo 97-10, as for IBAN

How the check digit is calculated

Join the coarse and fine address without the hyphen. Turn letters into numbers (A = 10 to Z = 35). Append two zeros and divide by 97. The check digit is 98 minus the remainder, written with two digits.

Where the Leitweg-ID goes in the invoice

In an XRechnung it is the buyer reference BT-10. If that field is missing, rule BR-DE-15 reports an error. On Peppol it serves as the buyer's electronic address (BT-49) with scheme 0204, for example 0204:991-33333TEST-33.

What this check does not do

A correct check digit only shows that the ID is well formed, not that it has been assigned. The public buyer tells you the valid ID, usually in the order. Some German states set their own identifiers for BT-10.

Based on the FeRD Leitweg-ID data sheet (German).
